The Grounds understands the importance of self-care, physical health, and wellness. Recovery is achieved when one embraces and nurtures all aspects of the self. We encourage all of our members to participate in the varied recreational activities we provide so that they can experience the peace of mind, stress release, and self-esteem that comes from physical activity and good physical health.
In addition to numerous opportunities for physical activities including surfing, swimming, basketball, skateboarding, road biking, mountain biking and beach cruising, The Grounds has a fully equipped gym available for unlimited use.
Weekly yoga classes and regular meditation opportunities teach the techniques of mindfulness and help our members recognize the proven benefits of quieting the mind. Our hope is that members will carry these new habits of self-care, stress relief, and wellness into their everyday lives long after their time at The Grounds.
Being in one of the finest surfing sites in the world, riding the waves is part of who we are, here at The Grounds. Many of our members and staff are surfers or become surfers while at The Grounds. True surfers, the really great ones, develop many of the skills and qualities also needed to succeed in life – patience, determination, courage, tenacity, and self-confidence. Like most physical challenges, surfing provides a great metaphor for life.
Maintain your balance, and get back up when you fall. There is always another wave. Through high tides and low tides, we ride them all. Surfing is a great stress reliever and a healthy alternative to alcohol and drugs. In addition to the excitement and challenge, it offers a sense of timelessness that is meditative and healing.
Though surfing embodies a huge piece of our spirit and personality, we understand it’s not for everyone. We’ll encourage you to give it a try and teach you how if you get inspired. If it’s not for you, then we’ll help you discover what excites you. We offer and encourage a wide range of sports including hiking, biking, kayaking, and yoga. Being in Southern California, and San Diego in particular, the opportunities are endless.
The Grounds believes in the importance of physical fitness and physical health, which are both keys to successful sobriety. The intro to boxing and jiu-jitsu class teaches members to challenge themselves through discipline and social connections while building motivation, perseverance, and teaching wellness.
