The San Diego Area

California’s second-largest city is a treasure hidden in plain sight. San Diego packs a lot into its 4,200 square miles, eighteen incorporated cities and numerous charming neighborhoods—each with its own distinct personality. Add to this, seventy miles of majestic coastline, five great ski resorts nearby, museums, art galleries, restaurants, and the best weather in the country, and you begin to get the picture.

San Diego is especially great for young adults. There are four major universities and multiple community colleges, along with an abundance of trade schools. In addition to a vibrant business community, a major port and an international airport, there is a thriving tourist industry with major attractions including The San Diego Zoo, Sea World, and Lego Land. Plus, two professional sport’s teams! There are not many places in the world where you can wake up early, drive two hours to the local ski mountains, and drive home and surf at dusk.

Location is Important

There is a reason The Grounds selected Soledad Mountain as our home. It is located between La Jolla & Pacific Beach—an ideal San Diego neighborhood for young men in transition. On one side, we are just a bike ride away from the college lifestyle of Pacific Beach, yet just far enough from the commotion that comes along with it. On the other side is La Jolla, which translates to “the Jewel.” La Jolla has some of California’s most beautiful coastline and hosts some of the world’s most famous surf spots and golf courses.

Both areas have an abundance of job opportunities, as well as 12-step meetings and support groups within biking distance. Our house is just one block away from Kate Sessions Park, which features extensive jogging and hiking trails, as well as incredible views of the entire city. There are also many excellent apartment complexes and shared roommate situations in close proximity for when Grounds members graduate from our program and transition into independent living.

We invite you to explore all of the many things our home, our community, and San Diego have to offer.
